A group of local singers were invited to a local church to sing – from a member of that church. The member had heard them sing at a revival and she felt that God was leading her to request their appearance at her church. The church member felt that this group was divinely gifted by God and was exactly what her congregation needed. The singers scheduled a time to sing at the church and made due on their promise. The band began to praise God and minister through their music. Everything was fine until the mother of the group decided to testify. The pastor of the church then stood up and stated he was protecting his flock. He continue to rebuke her and her testimony by arguing that it was inappropriate for any women to speak while behind the pulpit.
This was family of singers God called to minister to His people in song. God does not view any person of this group above or below the other, but mankind seems to make these distinctions. God is in complete control of what He is doing and He has his own reasons in doing what He does. Why should any of us feel that we have the right or power to rebuke the spirit of God? Life is better when we uphold each other. Spreading the gospel is more effective when we all work as a team. In fact, God calls us to worship in one accord. Worship is not just done at church, but is in all we do. Isaiah’s wife in scripture is an example of a husband and wife serving God. Isaiah’s calls his wife a prophetess and I highly doubt that he would lie about her title. We know very little about her, because written scripture limits her ministry. Isaiah mentioned his wife only once: “And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son” (Isaiah 8:3).
Many Christians against women in the ministry teach that Isaiah calls his wife “the prophetess,” simply, because she was married to the prophet. Nevertheless, our study of Isaiah’s wife, provides the evidence that she was also a prophet called by the same God Isaiah served. Our view should be taken seriously, because no other prophet called their wives a prophet. For further study you can examine the following scriptures: The prophet Ezekiel was married and when he spoke about his wife he said, “my wife died” (Ezek. 24:18). Ezekiel never called his wife neb’iah, a prophetess. The prophet Hosea was married to Gomer and when he spoke about his wife, he called her “my wife,” not the prophetess (Hos. 2:2).
In light of all this evidence, a prophetess is a called member of clergy no matter what mankind decides to call them or how others try to belittle the women. In God’s eyes she is a leader, a teacher, and a preacher. God may choose to give whomever He chooses a word from the Lord. Isiah and his wife were servants of God and no matter who was on stage they both received a word from the Lord to share with others.
I’m a member of Hissom Tabernacle Church of the Nazarene. The church is located in the heart of Charleston, WV. I’m so glad that God lead me to a church where all the members love to study God’s word. The members are really good about giving their testimonies and praise reports. The church was established in the 1934. It’s mission is truly to serve others. Monday through Friday and Wednesday nights, we serve meals to the homeless. We also have an open food pantry every Tuesday and it serves between 100 to 200 families a week. Then, we have a free clothing closet open Monday through Friday! In addition, I am currently serving as the Youth Pastor. The church allows me to volunteer in all the above areas; plus, I’m granted the following privileges: to lead the teenagers quartet, teach Wednesday night Bible studies, and be apart of the praise team. Finally, I also have 14 Bible Study books published and are available for purchase on Amazon.com.
