“I like work: it fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours.”
Labor Day came about through the labor movement in America to honor our workers for their achievements. Beginning in 1885, States passed legislation to praise their labor forces. On June 28, 1894, the US Congress passed an act making the first Monday of September a legal holiday for all Americans.
Believe it or not, physical labor can be a spiritual enterprise when seen in the proper context. For instance, in Exodus 34, Bezalel and Oholiab, along with other craftsmen, were set apart (holy) with their God-given skills to work on the sacred tabernacle, a place set apart for the presence of the LORD.
One’s labor can also be set apart as part of a holy life when we work in the name of the LORD. Colossians 3:17 reads:
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
The skilled workers at the tabernacle deserve honor for the work of their hands. All laborers deserve recognition for the God-given skills they possess in their crafts. All such work can be an honor to God.
As a nation, Israel fell into disarray after the death of Solomon. The nation divided into “Israel” in the north and “Judah” in the south. Eventually, both would fall into idolatry and be taken away into captivity – Israel to Assyria and Judah to Babylon. When the seventy years of Babylonian captivity were completed (see Jeremiah 25), King Cyrus sent the Jews back home. A remnant returned under the leadership of Zerubbabel. Nehemiah also returned to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
I am sure you know President Trump began building a wall between the US and Mexico to cut down on illegal immigration. Walls like this have been effective throughout history. The Great Wall of China kept the hordes out. The Bethlehem Wall has kept terrorists out of Israel, and the Berlin Wall kept people in. According to Revelation 21:12-14, there will be a wall to be in Heaven:
“12 It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— 13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.”
Matthew 22:11-14 reveals that there will be no undocumented people in heaven.
“11 “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”
The wall in Jerusalem appeared to be a giant task for the Jewish people when they returned home (Nehemiah 3). This wall provided several benefits to the people.
• It was a key to their identity
• It provided security.
• Ultimately, it was a means of restoring glory to God.
While the task seemed insurmountable in the beginning, they completed it in fifty-two days after they got to work (Nehemiah 6.15).
Big tasks require an intentional start.
The Jewish people did not build the wall by accident. Nehemiah began the construction when he prayed and determined how to accomplish the task. The Chinese have said, “The journey of 10,000 leagues begins with the first step.” It is planned, intentionally begun, and completed.
Big tasks require united cooperation. If the people had not cooperated and worked, they would not have completed the wall. Yet, they worked together on a joint mission and achieved it. Why is it that so many churches fail to accomplish much? Could it be that they have lost sight of their mission? Could it be that everyone wants to “do what is right in their own eyes” instead of what God wants?
We have a big, labor-intensive job to restore our Republic. We need to unite and act. When “We the People” speak, we can accomplish much. Each one of us has a job (in the Kingdom) and we need to be doing the best we can.
Work benefits the laborer and those for whom he labors. John Wesley once said, “Do all the good you can by all the means you can in all the ways you can in all the places you can to all the people you can as long as you ever can.”
We have much to do and we have an obligation to do it. Our Forefathers worked hard and paid a high price for our Liberty and to have a God-based government to protect Americans. Albert Einstein made this point:
“Every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving.”
Labor is a good thing and produces good. God gave Adam jobs in the Garden and has employed us. We are here for this time in history and have work to do to feed our families and restore our nation. Let’s honor labor and laborers on this Labor Day.
Keep The Light of Godly Labor Burning!
Now, remember, we are created in the image of God and as born again Christians we are supposed to be conformed to the image of Christ, so, whatever we do reflects not only on us but on God Himself.
Now, here’s an important distinction! Work is not just what we think of as work. Getting up early in the morning and heading off to a job.
Work involves every area of our lives.
How many of us “work” at our family relationships?
How many of us “work” at having good relationships with friends and coworkers?
Do we have a plan to interact with our children in a way that will build communication bridges instead of barriers.
Do we have a plan to bring the warmth of love and trust back into our family relationships?
We put ourselves to work at different things.
But whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. (Colossians 3:23-24NASB)
“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 NASB)
But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.” (John 5:17 NASB)
Rely on gifts given by the Holy Spirit
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. (Matthew 7:24-25 NASB)
Get Involved
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20 NASB)
Come to all church functions. Talk to the leaders of the church and see what is needed.
Pray for specific things for the church. Especially right now we need to pray for funds to come in to pay the insurance.
Praise God when you receive from God. Give Your testimony.
Help with upkeep of building and grounds
Invite people to church.
When people are absent, call them up and let them know that they were missed. 
Go downstairs and help serve to the homeless. on Tuesday for food pantry.
Don’t let one person stop you from working in the kingdom of God.
Help with driving someone to church.
Be a giver not a taker! Give tithe and offerings.
but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.” (1 Peter 1:15-16 NASB)
Are you a co-laborer with Jesus? Are you working for God’s Kingdom and Glory? Have you become distracted with the things of this world and need to get your shoulder back to the grindstone? Commit or recommit yourself to God and His Kingdom. Lay up for yourself treasures in Heaven!
