Where is your focus?

Exodus 19 marks a pivotal moment where God moves Israel from slaves to a “kingdom of priests” and “treasured possession” (v. 5-6). After delivering them on “eagle’s wings” (v. 4), God establishes a covenant, asking for obedience as a response to His grace, inviting them into a close, consecrated relationship.

When God saved my soul, my whole life changed. It was a pivotal moment where He brought me from death to live. Everything became a new. Soon, I no longer had the same desires and I no longer wanted to go to the same places. It was a profound spiritual transformation. I could feel the connection I had with Christ. I felt restored and renewed. It was the moment everything became clear to me. I received peace and assurance. Then, I had a sense of belonging to a community -a family! This experience of receiving the Holy Ghost transformed my life and influences what I now see, think, and feel.

God Reveals Himself at Sinai

19 Exactly two months after the Israelites left Egypt,[a] they arrived in the wilderness of Sinai.2 After breaking camp at Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and set up camp there at the base of Mount Sinai.

3 Then Moses climbed the mountain to appear before God. The Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “Give these instructions to the family of Jacob; announce it to the descendants of Israel: 4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. 6 And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.”

7 So Moses returned from the mountain and called together the elders of the people and told them everything the Lord had commanded him. 8 And all the people responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has commanded.” So Moses brought the people’s answer back to the Lord.

We who are saved have been taken From Bondage to Relationship

God is our deliverer. He was the deliver of his people here in Egypt and he is still delivering us from our sin and passing us from death to life.

Moses witnessed God’s power through the ten plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and the pillar of cloud and fire. He saw a manifestation of God’s glory/goodness from a cleft in the rock—described as seeing God’s “back” because his face could not be seen. He also spoke with God “face to face” as a friend.

What have you seen God do in your lifetime?

As a result of these encounters, Moses’ face radiated divine glory, requiring him to wear a veil.

Alright! Back to chapter 19! The Israelites were wanting to see and experience the miracles of God. It’s true that Moses seen victories in battle and was fed Manna from heaven, but we see in verse 16 God came down to the mountain, filled it with smoke, and God answered by His voice  God brings his glory to his people.

16 On the morning of the third day, thunder roared and lightning flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain. There was a long, loud blast from a ram’s horn, and all the people trembled. 17 Moses led them out from the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 All of Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke billowed into the sky like smoke from a brick kiln, and the whole mountain shook violently. 19 As the blast of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God thundered his reply. 20 The Lord came down on the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses climbed the mountain.

God will eventually get your attention even if He has to use drastic measures. Here, the people were witnesses of the events of events that were profoundly terrifying, overwhelming, and awe-inspiring experience, characterized by a mix of supernatural power and natural terror. As part of the Israelite camp, one would feel a deep, physical trembling—a literal shaking of the ground and a metaphorical shaking of the soul—upon seeing the mountain covered in smoke, fire, and hearing an unnatural, increasing trumpet sound.

So, friends let’s not focus on our to do lists. The devil wants to spend all of our time on just making through the day. He wants us to be consumed with the regular stuff, because we aren’t focusing on God. Today and this week let’s keep our eyes on Jesus. Let’s leave the big stuff like salvation up to God, but let us be about work for the kingdom.

Exodus 24:17 describes the glory of the LORD appearing to the Israelites as a “devouring” or “consuming fire” on the top of Mount Sinai. This imagery symbolizes God’s intense, holy presence, marking His majesty and power, which was visible to the people from a distance, requiring them to stand back.

This passage sets up a pattern in the Bible where God’s intense presence is described as fire, culminating in the New Testament concept of God as a “consuming fire.”

Even in Hebrews 12:29  we find “our God is a consuming fire,” which also highlights God’s absolute holiness, His divine judgment against sin, and His intense purity. This phrase signifies that God is not “tame,” but is an all-powerful force that burns away evil, idolatry, and impurity, demanding reverence and awe in worship.

Moses and his people spent 40 days and 40 nights at the mountain; which was shaking under their feet. Day one, day two, and day three, was perhaps great. But, the days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and the awaiting got to them. They went to the second man in charge Aaron. And in Exodus chapter 32 we find that the people got used to the sound. They stopped looking up. They stopped, focusing on God‘s true nature. They got in a rut! Their thoughts turned back to the past instead of looking to the future. They begin to reminisce about life in in Egypt. They lost their focused. They began thinking about their idols. In essence, satan entered into the picture. They forgot about looking for the miracles. They forgot about looking for the victory. They got used to the everyday the mundane things of life. They got use to getting free Mana from heaven. Today, remember God is the prize.

In Exodus 32:4 “Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!”

Boy! Just like us the people got way carried away in their sin. When the devil sees a crack, he makes it a ravine.

This week ask yourself “I’m I tired? I’m I weary? Where is my focus? How can I be about God’s business more?
