The unction of the Holy Ghost: Acts 3:2-3

Everyone who has accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior is filled with the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is what gives us the unction or the anointing to do the will of God.

Acts 2:1-5 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.

To picture the scene of Acts chapter two, we can image, at least a hundred and twenty disciples, including the apostles gathered in one place, because Acts 1:15. We also know they were there, because Jesus commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem in Acts 1:4. So, they were in the city, but they also assembled literally in “one place” in it. Then, we read in Acts 2:2-4 exactly how the Holy Ghost came to mankind. “2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” The sound of the wind came from Heaven and as promised by Jesus the Helper came. As the men, women, and children were gathered and took their next breathe the Spirit of the Lord filled their beings.
The Bible then describes the effects of ALL being filled with the Holy Spirit. We read the follow in scripture: Acts 2:5-9 “5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia.”
Next in scripture we follow Peter and John who go to the temple in Jerusalem. In Acts 3:1, we can confer the time to be after sunrise. The custom of man was to enter the temple to pray at the third, the sixth, and the ninth hours. Which many scholars correlate their time to the time of the United States to be 9 a.m., noon, and 3 p.m. Therefore, according to the scripture Peter and John were going to the last hour of prayer for that day. They traveled to the temple which was built at the temple mount. The temple mountain was a plateau on the east side of Jerusalem. The plateau was slightly higher elevated from the the rest of the city; so, that it was visible. According to the Bible the main event was about to occur. According to Acts 3:2-3 Peter and John were going to heal a lame man and the celebration was about to break out in the temple. Acts 3:2-3 states, “3 And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple; 3 who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms.”
Josephus, the Jewish historian, described this gate, which separated the inner court from the outer at being around 75 feet tall. Can you image how much foot traffic it would take to fill this temple? The massive double doors would have been wide open we all to witness the account. Acts 3:4-7 reports that this man was healed immediately. “4 And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.” 5 So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. 6 Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” 7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.” Following this: “he took him by the right hand and lifted him up” (Acts 3:7).

I strongly believe that if we are in Christ we are part of the New Creation and part of a community where old social paradigms of hierarchies and caste or class systems have no place in ministry. (2 Cor. 5:17; Gal. 3:28) Currently, with the Holy Spirit I am writing my 12th Bible Study. I enjoy volunteering at Elk Valley Christian school, guest appearances, traveling to teach God's word, doing research, and learning new things.
