Benefits of Praising God! What is an Anthem? (Psalm 111:1 and Psalm 112:1)

Praise ye the Lord! In all the world! -Hallelujah! All of these words and phrases are forms of a universal anthem for God’s people. This one word Hallelujah is a musical composition to the Lord. What are some other words or phrases that we use as anthems of praise?

Have you ever noticed that our book of Psalms asked us to pray to the Lord a lot? If not, below I have listed some of my favorite psalms.

Psalm 111:1 Praise the LORD. I will extol the LORD with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly.

Psalm 112:1 Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

Psalm 113:1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD.

Psalm 117:1-2 O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. 2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

These scriptures keep us humble and they reminding us that there is a God and we are not him.

Psalm 111:1, explains God’s works are true and good. It is intended to excite us to praise. Some of the works of God include the following: sustaining power, divine guidance, creation, and grace.
Psalm 112:1, explains a person who fears the Lord realized that God holds our next breathe. Knowing this we may sin less and living more holy lives. Learning to reverence the Lord causes us to appreciate God.
Psalm 113:1 is a Christian Anthem. If I was able to title this passage I would name it Hallelujah.
Psalm 117:1-2, informs us that we must share with others that God is great. Specifically, in this passage we are to tell others He is merciful and kind.
In the following scriptures, I’ve noted some reasons we can use today to give God our thanksgiving.
1. His words are true Ps 18:30
2. His holiness Is. 6:3
3. Forgiveness of sins Micah 7:18-19
4. His steadfast love, mercy, grace, faithfulness, forgiveness Ex. 34: 6-7
5. Nothing is impossible for God Mark 10:27
6. He is love. 1 John 4:7-8
7. Solid Rock, Rescuer, Shield Ps. 18:2
8. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever Hebrews 13:8
9. Jesus John 3:16-17
10. Nothing is to difficult for God Jeremiah 32:17
Some people and some places want to do away with the book of Psalm. This book is both historical and religiously sound. The book of Psalm can teach us so many things about God and the Holy Spirit. Originally, the Hebrews divided the book of Psalm into five chapters. This little book within our 66 books of the Bible was their song book! Psalm in Hebrew literally means praises.
Three reasons we need to study the book of Psalm is as follows:
1. The Psalms help us to PRAISE God
2. The Psalms help us PRAY to God
3. The Psalms help us understand JESUS better
Simply singing a hymn of praise can cast out demons, avert war, and send evil threats limping away. Today, many churches want to remove or have removed their hymnals and the book of Psalms from their pews. I find the removal of the song books from the church benches to be appalling, because there’s nothing wrong with the old music. On a side note, unless you are among the elect group of singers, one may not know how to read music. In addition, the school systems are not teaching the youth to read and sing music. I know, because I once was a classroom teacher! So, if we are not teaching Godly hymns from our church pews and the school systems are teaching this gift in school; then, who is teaching our kids?

In fact, I can feel the power of the Lord in those old hymns. In addition, finding singers and songs that are anointed by the Holy Spirit is even harder to find today. So, why in the world would you want to do away with the book of Psalm or the hymnals from pews?

Why else should all churches include the singing of hymns in Church?
Hymns teach Biblical happenings.
Hymns allow for a more genuine reactions of how we feel inside. The songs minister to us.
Hymns display thanksgiving and praise to our God.
Singing hymns is a way we teach God’s word through the use of poetry.

I strongly believe that if we are in Christ we are part of the New Creation and part of a community where old social paradigms of hierarchies and caste or class systems have no place in ministry. (2 Cor. 5:17; Gal. 3:28) Currently, with the Holy Spirit I am writing my 12th Bible Study. I enjoy volunteering at Elk Valley Christian school, guest appearances, traveling to teach God's word, doing research, and learning new things.
