Good Friday is a little mis-leading, because Christians use this day to remember a travesty. The word good is associated with the feelings of happiness. Easter is the day that brings happiness and celebration in our lives, but Good Friday is a celebration of the goodness that came from Jesus’s sacrifice.
Good Friday occurs on the Friday before Easter. Easter is the day Christians celebrate the Crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Good Friday It is customarily a day when all Christians fast and pray. Many churches leave their sanctuaries dark to express the sadness of Jesus having to die a horrific death. Christian churches even place black on the cross to remember the price Jesus had to pay for their sins. Today, Christians wear the crucifix, or cross, to represent the way Jesus died.
The day of darkness is remembered, because it was recorded in Luke 23:44–46 that darkness came over the land. The verse is as follows:
“It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.”
I’ve only been to one service where we waited until evening to go dark! As we entered the sanctuary we were all given a candle. Then, one by one, we blow out our candles. As the last candle was extinguished we recited Luke 23:44-46 and the preacher had a few things to say. Finally, when the sermon was over we sang and had prayer. The last thing to mention, is that other churches refuse to re-decorate until Easter Sunday symbolizing the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the newness of life He gives for all Christians.
