The Lord’s Prayer
Slide 2

Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him,
“Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” So He said to them, “When you pray, say: our Father in
heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by
day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us
into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
……………..In this section, we will explore the pattern of prayer that can transform our lives, homes, and communities. Recognizing God’s desire for us to become people of prayer—turning His house, and our own homes, into houses of prayer—offers us a meaningful path forward. To strengthen this commitment, we must do all that we can to embrace and practice prayer, making it an integral part of each day.
For example, setting aside a specific time daily for prayer or creating a quiet space in your home can help make prayer a regular and meaningful practice. By taking these practical steps, we invite prayer to become an effective and enriching part of our everyday life.
Slide 3

> One of His disciples – “unnamed” perhaps unknown to us – we do know there were others who were
followers of Jesus –
You might say, “I can’t sing,” or, “I’m not a teacher.” Set those concerns aside for a moment. Prayer is something everyone can do—regardless of our circumstances. Whether you are sick or healthy, young or old, busy or shy, outgoing or reserved, you can pray.
The important point is this: we can all pray, and truly, we all must pray. If you feel unsure about how to begin, remember the example of the disciple who asked the Lord to teach them. In the same way, we can ask the Lord to guide us in prayer.
Before sharing the prayer, it’s important to understand its context and significance. When one of Jesus’s disciples asked, “Lord, teach us to pray,” Jesus responded by offering a model prayer now known as the Lord’s Prayer, found in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 11:2-4) and also in Matthew 6:9-13. Jesus gave this prayer as a guide for how to approach God, emphasizing key spiritual principles such as relationship, reverence, daily dependence, forgiveness, and protection.
Slide 4

Jesus said:
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
Each phrase of the Lord’s Prayer teaches us something vital:
– “Our Father in heaven” establishes a loving relationship between us and God.
– “Hallowed be Your name” calls us to honor and revere God.
– “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” invites the fulfillment of God’s purposes in our lives and world.
– “Give us day by day our daily bread” reminds us to rely on God for our everyday needs.
– “And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us” highlights the importance of both receiving and extending forgiveness.
– “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” recognizes our need for God’s protection and guidance.
By understanding why Jesus gave this prayer and reflecting on its meaning, we discover a timeless blueprint for communion with God—one that shapes our hearts, our homes, and our communities.
Let’s begin again….
The First Phrase = Our Father in heaven
Identifies relationship
> Our Father – He is our father and we are His children – what a beautiful idea
– To me Father is a wonderful word picture – Father God is loving & kind
– when we think of the word, our father, it often brings up words like “the wise one” or “the good one,” but some people did not have a wonderful experience with a father; therefore, those people seem to take a lot longer to learn how good God is.
– What a privilege we have He lets us call him Father
– He considers us His sons and daughters
slide 5

2 Corinthians 6:18 “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”
Slide 6

Eph.1:5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will
> In heaven – He is set above – already beginning to esteem Him –
– knowing that God is in heaven always, ever seeing, ever knowing ever loving
– saying it reminds us – it acknowledges that He is there
> My father my loving daddy – ABBA Father – above all – knowing all – in place in heaven
– we have security knowing that daddy’s always home and always waiting to hear from us.
Second Phrase = Hallowed be Your name
HALLOW “to make holy”, signifies to set apart for God, to sanctify,
a person or thing the opposite of something or someone , “common”; with reference to the name of God
the Father in the Lord’s Prayer, Luke 11:2>. Same root word as – SANCTIFY
Slide 7

Psalm 34:1-3 I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. My soul will boast in the
LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together.
> We come to God in reverence & humility knowing that He loves us and He is Our Father
> Exalting His name – also serves us well in the process of Prayer
– when we exalt God it places our needs in perspective
– Above all else – my problems, my needs, and my sin – nothing compared to YOU!
> Also a Prayer for the people whom we are praying for – perhaps they are not living in the “fear of the Lord”
– especially in the context of prayer for the lost, or the sick, or those in need – Hallowed be Your name
– God please do what is needed and get Glory for yourself!
Third & fourth Phrases = Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven
> We have to think in terms of the Kingdom of God in 2 ways – What He wants now – What is coming
– God’s Kingdom will be established – both in this earth and ultimately in the new heaven & new earth
– God’s Kingdom coming in power will destroy the works of Satan – heal the sick – save the lost –
promote holiness & righteous living and we will see the power of the Holy spirit manifest in
our lives! Here on this earth just as it is in heaven!
> Praying that God’s will is done reveals a willingness on our part to do several things
– Know God’s will – study the Word – “ignorance of the law is not a defense.
– Fulfil His will – do everything that we can do to see His will accomplished
– On earth – Today – not something down the road – Today
Next Phrase – Give us today our daily bread
> Principles through out scripture teach us “How to pray for our daily needs”
1. Pray according to God’s will & for His Glory
Slide 8

I John 5:14-15 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us– whatever we ask– we know that we have what we asked of him.
2. We must put the things of God first in our life
Slide 9

Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
3. We must be content with what we have and serve the Lord faithfully
Slide 10

1 Timothy 6:6-10 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can
take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall
into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For
the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and
pierced themselves with many griefs.
4. We must be generous to God and others in order to receive from God
Slide 11

2 Corinthians 9:6-7 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously
will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Sixth Phrase in this model Prayer – Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us
> So hard for us – but it is so clear in scripture –
Slide 12

Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if
you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Finally – And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one
> God keep us on the straight and narrow – it is so easy to “fall into temptation”
> We need the Lord to help us – every day – I hate to sin/God hates sin- cry out to God – Help me = Deliver me
Prayer should reveal a dependency on God
> Our Father – perhaps – you need to make God Your Father today
> Hallow the name of the Lord – Praise Him
> Your kingdom – Your will – Your provision – today and every day
> needs daily bread – today is the day – God wants to provide for YOU!
> Lack of Forgiveness – holds so many in bondage
> Join me in asking God for strength to keep going forward – no temptation – only deliverance!
