Old Fashioned Sunday Message

Old Fashioned Christianity

God has given us 3 areas to meditate on this old fashioned day!

Today we will be preaching:

1. AGAINST SIN

2. ABOUT HELL

3. And ON SACRIFICE!

Let’s put on our thinking caps, open our eyes, and listen with our hearts

We like to talk about the good ole’ days…and sometimes we long for them!

Let’s play a Game together it’s called: Remember when…

Slide 2:

When you agree with a statement; your job is to Say amen!

1. Do you remember when…

You clean your rug by hanging it up and hitting it w/ a stick?

2. Do you remember when…

You could walk to the grocery store and rattle off your list to the clerk, and he would fetch them for you?

3. Do you remember when…

Movie theatre was cheaper on Saturday, and you didn’t have to worry about what you would see?

4. Do you remember when…

You receive the latest news from the radio?

5. Do you remember when…

Doors of your home were seldom locked?

6. Do you remember when…

Didn’t know you were poor because everyone else was just like you!?

7. Do you remember when…

People would stop by your house for food and then do a chore?

8. Do you remember when…You knew all the neighbors

Do you remember when… Mother would can all the vegetables she could before winter?

9. Do you remember when…No a/c but you didn’t know you were hot…it was always that way?

10. Do you remember when…At school you were expected to pay attention, and do what you were told the first time?

11. Do you remember when… Dr’s. made house calls carrying all they needed in the little black bag?

12. Do you remember when… “Gay” meant happy?

13. Do you remember when… a mouse was a rodent, not something in your hand at your desk?

14. Do you remember when…downloading was how you got the hay into the barn?

15. Do you remember when… a website was where spiders lived?

16. Do you remember when… when mom said “time out” it meant out in the woodshed?

17. Do you remember when… you hoped it wasn’t raining when you needed the restroom?

Our society has undoubtedly made significant progress in many areas, and much of this is worth celebrating. However, there is a growing sentiment among many that modern advancements have made faith less relevant or necessary. I believe that, now more than ever, we need spiritual guidance to navigate the complexities of our changing world.

Don’t you agree in your Spirit? -We Need Some Old Fashioned Preaching, but we want positive messages that stroke our echo.

What do I mean by this? By “old fashioned preaching,” I’m referring to sermons that focus on timeless biblical truths, boldly challenge listeners to self-reflection and repentance, and prioritize spiritual conviction over mere entertainment or feel-good messages. These sermons are marked by clarity, directness, and a deep commitment to God’s Word, aiming not just to comfort but to inspire meaningful change in the lives of those who hear them.

We need bold preaching w/out compromise. One of the greatest reasons for America’s moral washout is the watered down sermons coming from our pulpits! We need preachers to say, “thus saith the Lord”, w/out apology.

Slide 3

A preacher without boldness is like…

 a knife without an edge,

a gun without bullets,

A Mustang GT without an engine!

Slide 4

People today are very bold…….

Without their sin

out of closet

flaunt it

bragging about it at watercooler

` AND sometimes even Christians are bold about sin saying, “that’s who I am, like it or lump it!”

Preachers ought to be bold, too, in crying out against sin! And guess what? -I’m not the only preacher in the room!

– God made all of you preachers as well!

The need of the hour is prophets of God saying, repent, the kingdom of heaven is at hand!

Slide 5:

I recently listened to a sermon by Billy Sunday who lived in the early 1900s and guess what? -He preached boldly against sin!

He preached drunk before being saved is wrong and drunk while your saved is a sin.

He preached much on the wickedness of addictions!

He preached alcoholism this way:  He said, “one day he was asked to tone it down -to stop offending people- to stop rubbing the cat’s fur the wrong way! He then replied, “I’m not changing my preaching…let the cat turn around!”

Bold preaching is avoided because of fear in the 21st century…

But God says:

• Proverbs 29:25: “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trust in the Lord is kept safe.”

• Hebrews 13:6: “So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?'”

• Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

• Psalm 56:4: “In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.”

Slide 6

But not in the old days! What was the difference that made any difference? It wasn’t the man; it was the message!

The messages were rough

The messages where it was real…

it was how it was said

Is was loud at times

It was not acting it was accuracy

It was not …Personality it was purity…

It was not…. Walking on eggshells

It was not…stepping on toes

It was truth that hurt!

It sometimes came in a …Fiery delivery

It always delivered faithful content…

However, the fire today seems to be gone from most pulpits! Though the fire wasn’t the man, but the message, though it wasn’t delivery but content…the fire causes more to listen!  – And today If God gives it I will deliver it and if it gets to hot – I suggest you bring your water bottle.

Slide 7

Let’s move on…

one day a young preacher asked John Wesley how to get more people to come hear his preaching? The preacher said “I want bigger crowds!” John Wesley said, “allow God to set you on fire, and the people will come to watch you burn!”

Pray for me that the fire of my content will spread to my delivery! (don’t hesitate to help, either…say amen with the Spirit speaks… raise your hand when you agree… stop your feet if you like, but whatever you follow the Holy Spirit and stop quenching the Holy Ghost!!!!

Bold preaching is clear, concise, and direct. It should feel like it’s aimed right at you at times. The dedicated Christian seeks out a church where they can be uncomfortable!

Slide 8:

D.L. Moody said that good preaching will make people get right or get mad!

3 areas where we need more old fashioned preaching:

1. Against sin

Sin: man calls it an accident/God calls it abomination

man calls it Blunder/ God calls it blindness…

man calls it by chance/ God calls it by choice…

man calls it fascination/ God calls it fatality…

man calls it infirmity/ God calls it iniquity…

man calls it luxury/ God calls it leprosy…

man calls it liberty/ God calls it lawlessness…

man calls it mistake/ God calls it madness…

man calls it weakness/ God calls it willfulness

I believe in being positive…sharing the good news!

-But there is no good news until you face the bad news.

Slide 9

For example, -We must first present the plan of salvation…

Then in order to be saved we must Admit the sin (the bad)

We must Believe in the death, the burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. (the good)

Then we must Confess him as our Lord of Lord, Kings of Kings, and our Savior.

Then, the easiest confession is also followed up in baptism.

Slide 10 (Read aloud)

The flame is about to hit. If your are offended take it to God. – I don’t really want to know that the word offended you today!

Ill.— A mail carrier who doesn’t give you all your mail (we need preachers who will deliver all of God’s mail, and that includes the bills he sends when He reads our meters and the summons to appear before Him!)

All we’ve got today is junk mail about how to feel good about ourselves and add to society!

We need preachers to tell it like it is:

Abortion is murder, not a choice

homosexuality is an abomination, not an alternate lifestyle

Leviticus 18:22 ~ You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.

Leviticus 20:13 ~ If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

Jude 1:7 ~ Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Romans 1:26-28 ~ For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

Genesis 2:24 – Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Mark 10:6-9 ~ But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 – Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Timothy 1:8-11 ESV – Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.

1 Corinthians 7:2 – But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.

alcoholism is a sin, not a symptom and it’s not just a habit, it’s horrible!

Ephesians 5:18: “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be

• filled with the Spirit.”

• Proverbs 20:1: “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”

• 1 Timothy 5:23: “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.”

• Galatians 5:21: “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: fornication, adultery, uncleanness, lasciviousness, and such like: of

• the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

• 1 Corinthians 6:10: “Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”

My Overeating and my addiction to caffeine is not just a habit to live with it is not what God wants for me, it is a sin, and I need to stop!

1 Corinthians 10:31, which states, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” This verse emphasizes the importance of honoring God in all actions and decisions. Additionally, Colossians 3:23 encourages believers to work heartily as if serving the Lord, highlighting the significance of dedicating our efforts to God. These verses collectively emphasize the principle of honoring God in everything we do.

it’s adultery, not just an affair

it’s more than just a one night stand, it’s one nasty sin

AND there is no safe sex outside of marriage!

• 1 Corinthians 7:2-5: “But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband”.

• Hebrews 13:4: “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous”.

• 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality”.

• Galatians 5:19-21: “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality…”.

• Ephesians 5:3: “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints”.

We need more old-fashioned preaching against sin…

2. About hell!

We need old-fashioned preachers like Jesus, who preached on hell, the destiny of the damned…Jesus mentioned hell twice as much as heaven, but today some preachers are afraid to talk about it. However, I am not! Your preacher just gave you Wednesday 7aspects of Hell. I’m not going to do that here, but you can ask me later.

Recently I read an ad from a local church, targeted for the local church, which read: “looking for hell-fire, and damnation preaching? Tear up this ad! But if you’re looking for a church that preaches a loving, understanding, forgiving God, come give us a try!”

Let’s never forget that the plan of salvation contains some very bad news at the beginning!

We need more preaching against sin, about hell…

Slide 11

3.  Number 3 we need more preaching On sacrifice

We live in the day of comfortable Christianity…but Jesus, an old-fashioned preacher, was sacrificed with a horrible death! No, it was not clean, yes it was more than just a horror film -it was live and in person – and it deserves our attention. We can’t swept it under the rug and we should not be sugar coating it! -our salvation and our heavenly home is secured by its happening.

majored on sacrifice!

Matt. 16:24 Jesus said, if you want to follow me, you have to deny yourself, and take up your cross!

Slide 12

One day a group of men said to Jesus, we’ll follow you wherever you go, and Jesus turned to them and said, Matt. 8:20 “foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the son of man has no place to lay His head!”

He was serving notice: I’m calling you to a life of sacrifice!

Today it’s all handed to us…if it’s not easy, —I hear these words “I’m not interested.” Or “Pastor I’m BUSY!”

Do you know what BUSY stands for? I learned this at my retreat last week!

Burdened

Under

The Yoke

Of Satan!

So are you really to Burdened Under The Yoke Of Satan!-

busy for an extra Bible study a week?

So are you really to Burdened Under The Yoke Of Satan!-busy to spend extra time in prayer?

So are you really to busy Burdened Under The Yoke Of Satan!-for an extra bible reading?

So are you really to Burdened Under The Yoke Of Satan!-busy for visiting the sick in the hospital?

So are you really to Burdened Under The Yoke Of Satan!-busy to send a card in the mail to Burdened Under The Yoke Of Satan!-missing church members?

So are you really to Burdened Under The Yoke Of Satan!-busy for send a text or write a social media post for Jesus?

So are you really to Burdened Under The Yoke Of Satan!-busy to shake the hand of someone who just got saved?

I have a confession to make! Look around if someone is asleep, not listening, or on their phone, please wake them up for this next statement!

I am flat out mad at two people in this church! I have not addressed it with the two people, but they are now being notified! We had someone saved the other night at this church and they were to Burdened Under The Yoke Of Satan!—they refused to congratulating the person who just got gave their heart to the Lord! They would not get up out of their comfortable seats and go shake this person hand! I am furious and God is not pleased!

I even went over and asked them to shake their hand, and they told the Pastor No! If the roles were reversed this person would have been offended and they would have told everyone about it. I have you know the new convert has not even asked why or spoken to me about it! These individuals need to go in private and welcome their new family member to the body of Christ!

Here’s a note left by a dying missionary in Zimbabwe…it was found on his desk:

Its now a poem: I’m part of the fellowship of the unashamed.

I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made.

I’m a disciple of Jesus Christ.

I won’t look back, let up, slow down, back away, or be still.

My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, my future is secure.

I’m finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning,

smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, cheap

living, and dwarfed goals. I no longer need prosperity,

position, promotions, or popularity. I don’t have to be

I no longer need right,

I no longer need recognized,

I no longer need praised,

I no longer need regarded or rewarded.

I now live by faith,

I now lean on His presence, I now walk by patience,

I now am lifted by prayer and labor by power.

My face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is heaven, my road is narrow,

my way rough, my companions few, but my Guide is reliable, my mission clear.

I cannot be bought, I won’t be deluded

And I won’t be delayed.

I will not flinch in the face

of sacrifice, I will not hesitate in the presence of the adversary,

I will not negotiate at the table of the enemy

I won’t  meander in the maze of mediocrity.

 I won’t give up, I won’t shut up,           I won’t let up, until I have stayed up,

I’ve stored up, I’ve prayed up, I’ve paid up,

And preached up for the cause of Christ.

I am a disciple of Jesus.

I must go till He comes,

I must go till I drop,

I must preach till all know, and work till He stops me…

Finally, We need more preaching on sacrifice, hell and judgment, and against sin!

In other words, today’s message starts with me…but we also need some old-fashioned Christians who’ll get seriously sold out for God,

who’ll believe He can do it again (decision cards on table) who’ll get on their knees begging God to do it again—“and I’m not leaving my knees ‘til you do it again!”

I strongly believe that if we are in Christ we are part of the New Creation and part of a community where old social paradigms of hierarchies and caste or class systems have no place in ministry. (2 Cor. 5:17; Gal. 3:28) Currently, with the Holy Spirit I am writing my 12th Bible Study. I enjoy volunteering at Elk Valley Christian school, guest appearances, traveling to teach God's word, doing research, and learning new things.
